How Many Avionics Technicians Are in the US?

There are approximately 21,400 avionics technicians employed in the United States as of 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Avionics technicians specialize in installing, inspecting, testing, adjusting, and repairing electronic equipment in aircraft — including radar, radio, navigation, and communication systems. Combined with the 139,400 aircraft mechanics and service technicians, the total aircraft and avionics maintenance workforce is approximately 160,800.

Avionics technicians represent roughly 13% of the combined aircraft and avionics maintenance workforce. As next-generation aircraft increasingly rely on integrated digital systems and advanced navigation suites, demand for avionics specialists is growing. The BLS projects 5% combined employment growth from 2024 to 2034 and about 13,100 annual openings across both mechanic and avionics roles.
