How Fast Is Aviation Mechanic Employment Growing?

5%

projected employment growth for aviation mechanics, 2024-2034

BLS, 2024

Employment of aircraft and avionics equipment mechanics and technicians is projected to grow 5% from 2024 to 2034, faster than the average for all occupations, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. About 13,100 openings are projected each year on average over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, including retirements.

Growth is driven by rising air traffic, increasing aircraft complexity, and expanding commercial space operations. The 5% headline rate understates the actual hiring need — the majority of those annual openings come from replacing workers who leave the occupation, not from new positions. With the average certificated mechanic at 54, replacement demand will dominate for the foreseeable future.
