new maintenance technicians needed globally by 2044

Boeing Pilot & Technician Outlook, 2025

Boeing's 2025 Pilot and Technician Outlook projects that 710,000 new maintenance technicians will be needed worldwide to support the global commercial aviation fleet through 2044. This is part of a broader need for nearly 2.4 million new aviation professionals — including 660,000 pilots and 1,000,000 cabin crew members — driven by rising air travel demand and expanding fleet sizes. Of the 710,000 technicians needed, approximately 123,000 will be in North America alone.

Two-thirds of the 710,000 new technicians will replace retiring workers, with one-third supporting fleet expansion. The largest regional needs are in Eurasia (165,000), China (131,000), and North America (123,000). The forecast covers commercial aviation only — it excludes business aviation and civil helicopters, meaning total demand is even greater.
