How Many A&P Schools Are in the US?
FAA-certificated aviation maintenance technician schools (AMTS) in the US
ATEC, 2025
There are 208 FAA-certificated aviation maintenance technician schools (AMTS) in the United States as of 2024, according to the Aviation Technician Education Council. These Part 147 schools produce approximately two-thirds of all newly certificated mechanics each year. AMTS enrollment increased 9% year-over-year in 2024, but about one-third of available seats remain unfilled.
The enrollment gap is driven by lack of career awareness and instructor shortages — the A&P instructor workforce remained flat in 2024 despite rising enrollment. Some schools maintain waitlists while other seats go empty due to geographic mismatch. ATEC estimates the industry needs about 75 more designated mechanic examiners (a 30% increase) to meet projected testing demand.
