How Many Aviation Mechanics Are Approaching Retirement?
certificated mechanics expected to reach retirement age within the next 10 years
ATEC/Oliver Wyman, 2025
More than 45,000 FAA-certificated aviation mechanics are expected to reach retirement age within the next decade, according to the ATEC/Oliver Wyman 2025 Pipeline Report. With the average certificated mechanic at age 54 and 41% of the workforce over 60, the wave of retirements is already underway and is expected to accelerate over the coming decade.
The BLS projects about 13,100 combined openings for aircraft and avionics mechanics each year from 2024 to 2034, many driven by the need to replace workers exiting the labor force. Even as the FAA issues record new certificates (9,013 in 2024), the outflow of experienced mechanics is projected to exceed new entrants. Independent repair stations and regional carriers face the steepest challenge competing for shrinking talent.
